Gloria Arroyo's Interview

Solar Storms? ... end of the world?

I just read this one from yahoo news.  About solar storms, this idea never came up into my mind and now I've realized how scary it was. According to the news our sun now has dozens of sunspots.  It has 17 and one is about the size of the earth.  After years of quiet, the sun is coming alive with solar storms in a big way. The outer solar atmosphere, the corona, is structured by strong magnetic fields, which when closed can cause the atmosphere to suddenly and violently release bubbles or tongues of gas and magnetic fields called coronal mass ejections which streak out through the interplanetary medium, impacting any planets or spacecraft in its path. So, it might be possible that out planet will be hit by one of these.... Scarry

Making a Difference

This video is really depressing. I took pity on this children. I realized how lucky we are even if we are not that abundant. Atleast we can eat 3 times a day and live a normal life. And I am happy that we have some organizations who worked hard to helped other people who are in need. This video teaches us to value the food in our table, even if it is not our favorite. The bed we sleep, even if it is not that soft. The water we drink. Maybe it is time for us to make a difference, let us help each other. Like what Mother Teresa said. "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one"

Super Big Crocodile in the Philippines

This is the image of the giant crocodile that was captured last Saturday in Bunawan township, Agusan del Sur Province. It was estimated to be 21-foot (6.4-meter) long and 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms). The crocodile killed a water buffalo last month and was suspected of having attacked a fisherman who were missing last July. It was captured by the villagers by setting a trap and about 100 people had to pull the crocodile from the creek to the clearing where it is lifted by a truck. It will be place into an ecotourism park in the southern Philippine town.

August 29 and 30 are holidays!

MalacaƱang has declared August 29 (Monday) and August 30 (Tuesday) non-working holidays, making it a 4-day long weekend for some sectors. On August 29 we will celebrate the National Heroes Day and August 30 is the end of Ramadan. Section 2 of Proclamation 84 states that the proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of end of Ramadan "shall hereafter be issued after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient. To this end, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall inform the Office of the President on which day the holiday shall fall."

How to Save Fuel in your Car

Only buy or fill up your car or bike during early morning, when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks underground. The colder the ground, the more dense the fuel. When it gets warmer, petrol expands. So, buying in the afternoon or in the evening, your liter is not exactly a liter. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature play an important role. 1 degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. Another important tip is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less is the air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks then you stop to buy, DO NOT fills up--most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you mi

Amazing Stoy: Woman catches toddler who fell 10 stories

I've read this news from yahoo and I find it very interesting, so I posted it here. To this woman I salute you and you are an angel sent by God to save the child. BEIJING (AP) — A two-year-old Chinese girl left unattended fell 10 stories from her family's apartment window and survived after being caught by a woman passing by, state media reported Sunday. The toddler was in critical condition Sunday with internal bleeding and other unspecified injuries while the woman who saved her suffered a broken arm, China Central Television and the Xinhua News Agency said. The girl, named Zhang Fangyu but known by the nickname Niu Niu, was in the care of her grandmother Saturday afternoon when the older woman left the 10th-floor apartment outside the eastern city of Hangzhou to run an errand, CCTV said. Neighbors saw Niu Niu dangling from the apartment window for several minutes, Xinhua said, and when the girl fell, Wu Juping "kicked off her high-heeled shoes" and ran to

Yes to Divorce Bill

In May, Malta voted "Yes" in a referendum to legalize divorce in their staunchly Catholic country. That leaves the Philippines as the only country, apart from the Vatican City State, that does not allow divorce. Gabriela Rep. Liza Maza first filed a divorce bill in Congress in 2005. The bill was re-filed in August 2010 by Gabriela Women's party-list. Committee deliberations began on June 1, 2011. To help readers understand the provisions of House Bill 1799, or An Act Introducing Divorce in the Philippines, GMA News Online publishes the full text of the Divorce Bill filed by Gabriela Women's party-list. — GMA News Republic of the Philippines HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE Quezon City FIFTEENTH CONGRESS First Regular Session House Bill No. 1799 Introduced by GABRIELA Women's Party Representatives LUZVIMINDA C. Are you Pro or Anti the RH Bill?

One of the hottest topic in the Philippines today is the issue on RH Bill(Reproductive Health Bill). What is RH Bill? The Reproductive Health bill, popularly known as the RH bill, is a Philippine bill aiming to guarantee universal access to methods and information on birth control and maternal care. There are presently two bills with the same goals: House Bill No. 4244 or An Act Providing for a Comprehensive Policy on Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health, and Population and Development, and For Other Purposes introduced by Albay 1st district Representative Edcel Lagman, and Senate Bill No. 2378 or the Reproductive Health Act introduced by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago. While there is general agreement about its provisions on maternal and child health, there is great debate on its key proposal that the Filipino taxpayer and the private sector will fund and undertake widespread distribution of family planning devices such as birth control pills (BCPs) and IUDs, as the gov

June 20, 2011 is a holiday

It was declared a special non-working holiday to commemorate the 150th birthday of the country's national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. "(This is) to give all Filipinos the opportunity to commemorate Rizal’s patriotic deeds and sacrifices for the country, rekindle their admiration and respect for him, and to celebrate this milestone with appropriate ceremonies," President Benigno Simeon Aquino III said in Proclamation No.154 issued on April 26. The said date was being declared as holiday because of the request of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines to commemorate the hero's birthday. Rizal's birthday was on June 19 but since it falls on Sunday it was moved to the nearest Monday.

UP BS Math graduated with a GWA of 1.016

A UP graduate in University of the Philippines Diliman graduated with a GWA of 1.016. His name is John Gabriel Pelias. His general weighted average of 1.016 set a record that second only to Exequiel Sevillam who graduated with a degree in BS Commerce in 1927 with an average of 1.0. As a UP graduate, I know it is very difficult to get a 1.0 to 2.0 grade in Math subjects. He must be very intelligent and very hardworking student. Congratulations!

The End of the World is Coming - LUCIA REVEALS THE THIRD SECRET OF FATIMA

I receive this email from one of my friends. Is this true? LUCIA REVEALS THE THIRD SECRET OF FATIMA Regardless of whatever Creed or Religion, it is better to be prepared and be in good terms with GOD,...who created us; for we never know when we will be leaving this world..... LAST SECRET OF FATIMA The Church has given permission to reveal to the people the last part of the message. The Blessed Virgin appeared to three children in Fatima , Portugal , in 1917......... this is a proven fact;one of these children was Lucia, (died 2-13-05). She was a cloistered nun, and lived in a monastery in Portugal . Lucia disclosed the message for the first time; to Pope Pius Xll who, after reading , sealed it and stored it away without making it public. Later Pope John XXIII read it and, in the same manner as his predecessor, he kept it out of the public eye because he knew that once revealed; it would bring desperation and panic to mankind, But now the time has come, an

Prepare for a possible Tsunami in the Philippines

State seismologists raised a tsunami alert over at least 19 areas in the Philippines on Friday afternoon after a magnitude-8.9 quake hit Japan, the biggest to hit that country in seven years. 19 Philippine provinces are facing the threat of tsunami, in red below: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Tsunami Alert Level 2, warning of possible waves reaching Philippine shores between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. The Phivolcs advised the public to be on alert for unusual waves, which may be as high as one meter. MalacaƱang on Friday ordered the mandatory evacuation of the residents living 10 to 40 meters from the shoreline of Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos, Isabela and 15 other provinces. At a press briefing in MalacaƱang, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said based on the alert level 2 raised by the Philvocs, a four-meter high tsunami is expected to hit the 19 provinces around 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. He said alert level 2 means a mandatory evacuation of the resi

Facebook denies shutdown rumors

Facebook users won't have to worry anymore, because the popular social networking site has denied that it would shut down its operations come March 15. "We didn't get the memo about shutting down, so we'll keep working away like always," Facebook said on its status posted eight hours ago. Facebook denies its alleged impending shutdown and hints that it's far from being forced to do so. - photo courtesy of Josh Villanueva Rumors about the supposed shutdown began spreading this weekend when an article published on the Weekly World News, a news-parody website, reported that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had announced at a press conference: “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness." The networking site, however, denied the news and even hinted that it plans to expand rather than shut down its operations. "We aren't going anywhere; we're just getting

The man with a Golden Voice

His name is Ted Williams, and he's an ex-radio announcer according to the note he scrawled on a piece of cardboard that he used to solicit change from drivers. And wow, does Williams ever deliver for a dollar. Williams tells the Dispatch about his struggles, but thankfully "alcohol and drugs and a few other things" haven't diminished Williams' velvety vocal cords, and he says he's two years clean now. "I have a god given gift of voice. I'm an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be greatfully appreciated. Thank you and God bless. Happy holidays," reads Williams' roadside sign for help.

Taxis flagdown rate increases from 30 to 40 pesos.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in the Philippines announced that starting Jan. 15, the flagdown rate of taxicabs would be P40 from the previous P30. Lawyer Manuel Iway, LTFRB board member, said there would also be a new rate of P3.50 for the succeeding 300 meters. The present rate is P2.50. Iway said that under the LTFRB decision, only taxicabs that have metered receipts could avail of the fare hike.
